Did you know the first time a president mentioned Thanksgiving was on October 3, 1789? George Washington was the president and he made a formal proclamation of Thanksgiving in America. But he was not the president that made Thanksgiving a national holiday. That would have been Abraham Lincoln. In 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln helped pass legislation which created the national holiday.
Are we missing any other holidays that should be made into National Holidays? Let me know in class or email me.
