U.S. Army Celebrates Birthday on June 14

Some cool facts about the United States Army to celebrate the Army's birthday!

• The United States Army is about 250 years old!

• Thirty presidents served in the Army and/or state militias, including Captain Abraham Lincoln.

• Only about 1/4 of 17-23 year-olds are qualified for military service.

• During the American Revolution, Francis Marion (“the Swamp Fox”) pioneered modern guerrilla warfare.

• In 1778, the Continental Congress asked General Washington to create a service uniform for the Continental Army.

• When considering the American Revolution was fought before the United States became a country, the army is older than the United States.  The Second Continental Congress authorized a Continental Army to be created on June 14, 1775.

• George Washington was the best man for the job when he became General of the American Army during the American Revolution.  He had the most experience having fought in the French and Indian War and he had served as commander-in-chief of the Virginia Regiment.
