The very first Veteran's Day was celebrated on November 11, 1919. November 11th was the one year anniversary of Armistice Day. Armistice Day was the end of World War I, also known as The Great War. The Great War ended when the Allied nations and Germany stopped fighting on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. In 1938, Armistice became a national holiday and the name was changed to Veteran's Day.
The original intent of the holiday was to spend it remembering the men and women who have fought so bravely for our country at parades and public meetings. To do that, work and school must be closed for the day.
There are lots of parades in the Los Angeles area today. Go out and find one to celebrate this day in history.
How do you celebrate Veteran’s Day? Do you know any Veteran’s? Give them a shout-out and mention them in class.
