Memorial Day is always held on the last Monday of May and it dates all the way back to the Civil War. The first national Memorial Day occurred in 1868, but back then it was called Decoration Day. On Decoration Day flowers and other items were used to decorate the graves of soldiers who had died during the Civil War. Eventually, the name was changed to Memorial Day and in 1971, the day was settled to the last Monday in May.
In 2000, President Bill Clinton urged Americans to remain silent at 3 p.m. to "remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all".
