A lot of people don’t know that after Texas won its independence from Texas in 1846 it asked to become a state in the United States. The United States said no. Long story short, the United States did not want to disrupt the very fragile balance of power between the anti-slavery North and the pro-slavery South. So, on March 2, 1836, Texas became its own country, known as the Republic of Texas. It would take some time and a few presidents but finally, on February 28th, 1845, Congress passed a bill that annexed the Republic of Texas to the United States. One year later, on February 19, 1846, Austin became the state capital of the state of Texas.
